Summer is here and vacation anticipation is increasing across the country. Germans love car trips within their country: 61 percent would rent an electric car when traveling in Germany - this is now shown by a YouGov survey Monta. But anyone who travels with an electric car will sooner or later be faced with the big question of charging. To make travel and stay easier, e-drivers can now see on an interactive map which regions of Germany are the best - and worst - travel destinations for a trip with an electric car.
What you can expect:
Berlin, on September 05.07.2023th, XNUMX. Cars are one of the most popular means of transport, and not just for trips within your own country. Rental cars are also very popular abroad. While six out of ten Germans want to travel electrically within Germany, 53 percent would rent an electric or hybrid car outside of Germany. “Your own car Vacation Using it offers a lot of freedom and flexibility, but is not always environmentally friendly.
“It is a positive signal that the majority of Germans now value sustainable mobility and are increasingly turning to electric cars,” says Max Scherer, COO of Monta.
The results also show that Germany is a pioneer when it comes to electromobility: with 61 percent, Germany trumps France and the United Kingdom, where only 53 and 54 percent would go on vacation using electricity.
Hotels with electric charging stations are in short supply
Anyone who goes on vacation with an electric car must find out in advance about charging options along the way, but especially where they are staying. There doesn't seem to be enough of this in Germany, as the analysis also shows: nationwide, only around seven percent of holiday accommodations have a charging infrastructure for guests. But 40 percent of Germans would very or somewhat probably prefer accommodation with a charging option. Scherer adds: “For the first time, there are over a million electric cars on Germany’s roads and after the pandemic and inflation, cheaper, domestic short trips by car are the trend.” For tourism, this means increasing demand that will have to be managed in the future.
Which federal state is the most electric-friendly
Which holiday destination is easiest to charge? Monta searched through several booking platforms. The result: Of almost 130.000 accommodation options, only around 9.500 have a charging option - that's 7,3 percent. Lower Saxony made it to first place in the federal state ranking: around twelve percent of the accommodations here currently have a charging option. With an average of an impressive 82 percent, Lower Saxony's Artland is the front runner among the districts and districts. With just 4,8 percent - and 647 ways to charge a car at the place of accommodation - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania brings up the rear.
Bavaria comes in second, followed by Hesse and Brandenburg. Hamburg is in fifth place, Berlin in sixth place (Baden-Württemberg 7th, Schleswig-Holstein 8th, North Rhine-Westphalia 9th, Saxony 10th, Thuringia 11th, Saarland 12th, Bremen 13th, Rhineland-Palatinate 14th place, Saxony-Anhalt 15th). “The interactive tool is intended to make it easier for e-drivers to find accommodation with charging options – especially in regions where the charging network is not well developed,” says Scherer.
What e-drivers pay attention to on vacation
Monta also asked people from Germany about their travel behavior by car (multiple answers possible). Germans see the duration and costs as the most common obstacle or restriction for charging at public stations, at around 30 percent each - and the fact that these are often not apparent in advance.
Around 20 percent lack a good overview of the locations of the e-charging stations, and a quarter of those surveyed would not trust that there are actually enough charging points available locally. Another disruptive factor for many is the fact that different charging cards, apps and memberships are sometimes required for charging at different locations.
Transparent loading and easy management
The Monta software aims to offer hotels and accommodation operators a simple solution when it comes to operating, managing and billing e-charging stations for guests: “Charging station operators can use it to determine who can charge, at what time and at what price. Access permission can be changed at any time, for example when new visitors arrive. Our software is compatible with many charging station models and is intended to simplify guest charging for hotel operators.”
Guests, on the other hand, can join a digital queue so that charging processes can be better coordinated. “This can be particularly relevant if a visitor wants to leave fully loaded,” says Scherer. Furthermore, e-drivers have access to more than 340.000 e-charging stations throughout Europe via the app. “Before a charging process is started, the current price is visible and drivers have various payment options available – including paying via payment terminal,” Scherer concludes, explaining the app’s elementary functions.

YouGov survey methodology: The survey was carried out by the analysis institute YouGov. A total of 6747 Germans aged 18+ were surveyed using the CAWI method between March 6 and 15, 2023.
Analysis methodology: Monta collected data from online booking platforms to find out how many accommodation options they have and how many of them offer electric charging stations. The percentage share of each region was then calculated. To determine the overall average for each region, each platform's total was taken and divided by the number of platforms included. This is because the same accommodation option can be available on multiple platforms. Areas with fewer than 100 accommodation options or regions where only one booking platform was able to provide results are not part of the study.
About Monta: Monta is an all-in-one platform for charging electric cars - for both B2B and B2C sectors. Founded in December 2020 by Casper Rasmussen and Anders Pedersen in Copenhagen, Monta has already recorded more than 2 million loads from around 110.000 active users. The business model: Software for charging stations as well as an app and a digital portal for charging electric cars. With the app, e-drivers have access to more than 280.000 charging points across Europe, but can also convert their own wallbox at home into an intelligent charger by supplying electricity to the vehicle when it is cheapest.
Monta also offers companies and organizations with charging stations a comprehensive solution to attract users: set up and expand a charging infrastructure and seamlessly manage the use of charging stations, prices, access and transactions and sell charging power to third parties. In short: Not only to simplify the expansion of electromobility, but also to make money with it. Monta's customers are all players along the store's value chain: from installers and fleet operators, to the real estate industry and hotel industry, to end customers. Monta offers you complete services for billing management, dynamic load management and charging adapted to flexible electricity prices. Since July 2021, Monta has been represented in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Great Britain, Ireland, Germany and Austria. The scale-up is currently valued at 155 million euros and has so far raised around 50 million euros in equity capital. More under monta.com/de/.
