The challenges facing parents today are more diverse and complex than ever. The influence of social media in particular is arousing fears that are causing many German parents sleepless nights: for around 63%, social media and online bullying are at the top of the list of concerns. This is the result of a recent survey by Censuswide on behalf of the online retailer Haypp, in which over 1.000 mothers and fathers were asked about the potential problem issues they fear most when it comes to their children. Concerns about the physical and mental well-being of their children are further exacerbated by the increasing academic and social pressures that adolescents are exposed to.
What you can expect:
Excessive media consumption, constant accessibility and the perceived pressure to present a flawless image on social networks often lead to a distorted self-image and increased stress. But that's not all! The well-known issue of cigarette consumption is also a major concern for parents. Around 30% of mothers and fathers fear that their children will take up cigarettes - so cigarette consumption remains a pressing concern in the lives of German parents.
Berlin, on September 24.10.2024th, XNUMX. Parents continue to face many familiar concerns – whether related to health, schooling or social interaction – but at the same time they must also face new challenges. The omnipresent presence digital media has not only fundamentally changed access to information, but also the way Who Child grow up. This mixture of traditional fears and modern difficulties, especially in the digital space, leads to problems that can significantly affect family life. Such concerns are not only evident in the Daily life, but also concern serious topics such as Drug abuse, cigarette consumption and mental health, which keep many parents awake at night and thus put a strain on parenting and the general well-being of the family.
Stress, Addiction and Beauty Obsession
The survey makes it clear that parents have a wide range of concerns. The top concerns are social networks and online bullying. These two topics have become the biggest fears for more than 60 percent of respondents in recent years. The ubiquitous presence of social media and the associated risks such as cyberbullying are putting the younger generation under considerable pressure.
“In addition, a fifth of the mothers and fathers surveyed see the desire for cosmetic surgery as another sign of today’s online culture, which is reinforced by platforms such as Instagram and TikTok,” explains Markus Lindblad, Germany spokesman for the online retailer Haypp.
An second place in the list of concerns For almost half of all parents, concern about the mental health of their children – especially issues such as Depression and anxiety disorders are of great importance to many families. The future of their children also remains a key concern: school performance and the associated career opportunities are a concern for a third of German parents. Traditional problems such as drug abuse (34,1 percent) and the consumption of cigarettes (30,3 percent) and alcohol (29,4 percent) also represent significant concerns.
Cigarette problem: Parents demand more education
While that topic of smoking has been the focus of attention for many years, many parents still face the challenge of educating their children adequately about cigarettes. Despite a decline in the smoking rate among young people, awareness of the health risks remains high.
“The survey shows that almost all parents (94,81 percent) consider it important to talk to their children about the dangers of smoking, with three quarters rating the exchange as ‘very important’,” reports Lindblad.
However, many parents often feel unsure how best to address this issue. This uncertainty increases the concern that their children will come into contact with cigarettes at an early age and possibly develop an addiction. "Studies in recent years show that the consumption of Cigarettes impair brain development at a young age and increases the risk of other addictions in adulthood,” explains Lindblad. What is particularly worrying is that smoking not only negatively affects brain development, but also limits the brain's ability to regulate stress and emotionsIt is clear that informing families about the risks of cigarette consumption is an essential part of education in order to protect their children from health risks.
Big dilemma: mothers talk, fathers remain silent
It is also fascinating how differently mothers and fathers deal with the issue of smoking in parenting. “The survey reveals significant gender differences when it comes to communicating with children about the dangers of smoking. While a quarter of mothers say to have such conversations regularly, this only applies to one in ten fathers", reports Lindblad about the current situation. Nevertheless, half of all those surveyed stated that both parents talk equally about the existing risks. However, there remains a small proportion of around ten percent in which neither the mother nor the father has such discussions.
